Motorcycle Repair: clutch, honda magna, air locks

Question
i have a 85 Honda magna and i am having clutch issues. the clutch has no resistance and i am not able to switch through the gears. i have rebuilt the master cylinder and was wondering what else could be wrong

Answer
Hi Andre,

It could also be a problem with the lower
slave cylinder on the engine.
It has a push rod behnd it that could
be bent or the seals could be worn.

Also there can be pockets of air in the
brake lines. Sometimes it is necessary
to bleed the lines by loosening
the actual line bolts on the fluid
cylinders and pump the fluid out
into a jar half full of fluid
to get all the air out.

If there are no bubbles coming back up
into the master cylinder then it
might be free of air.

Loosen the line on the slave cylinder and
see if the fluid is pumping well there.

Check the slave seals and push rod.
Get a "Mity-Vac" or such if necessary
to bleed the lines.

If the bleed back hole is plugged inside
the master cylinder it may not work
well. If you cleaned it out good then
it might be okay.

The slave cylinder pushes on the push rod
in it's center and that in turn pushes
on the clutch to separate the clutch plates.

Roll the push rod to check it for bends.

It can often just be air bubbles and air locks
that can be a pain to clear out.
Pump lots of fluid through into the fluid
jar and then close up the bleed screw
or the line bolts and try it again.

Good luck!
