Car Stereos: stereo, speaker sound system, hi ed

Question
Hi Justin

I'm looking to replace my existing double din JBL stock head unit from my 2004 Camry with an Eclipse single din head unit. I'm not tech savvy and only could guess what it means, but I seen some radios list the preamp as 5 volt; others as 8 volt. I'm not sure what my existing "voltage" is in my Camry, but should I opt for an 8 volt? Will I notice a difference between the 5 and the 8?

I want a good powerful sounding system that sounds as good as if not better than my stock JBL. No external amps or subs. Just the radio and the stock JBL 6 speaker sound system (I replaced the rears with Infiniti reference 3-ways). While we're at it, any opinion on the old Eclipse brand?

Thanks
Ed

Answer
Hi Ed,

If you're not adding an amplifier, the preout voltage will be meaningless to you anyway.

Aside from that, that's mostly marketing weenie talk anyway.  Just get the unit you like and you'll almost certainly find it sounds better than stock.
