Motorcycle Repair: CBX 1000Z -79 not starting, starter button, volt meter

Question
Hi Jan,

I have a mint CBX Z  and yesterday it would not start. Pressing start the neutral light dimmed 20%, no click, no start. Put the volt meter on solnoid plus from batteri + frame. Pressed start= no voltage. Measured voltage over batteri while pressing start and it showed 13V constantly. No starter circuit engaged it seem. Do you recon that isolates the problem to Startswitch or cablehouse? Or someone ground issue? I found a new switch on cmnsl.com.

Answer
You're doing the right kind of checks...  But find the white connector from the solenoid (may be a different color if it was aftermarket, anyway check for a +12V on one of the connectors (trigger wire) when you press the start button.  Both the start buttons as well as the solenoids can be troublesome, but typically the solenoid will be the first suspect.  If you are getting the 12V on the trigger wire, and no clicking sound, then it is the solenoid causing the problem.  If you're not getting 12V on the trigger wire, then the starter button is not making a good connection.  Good luck,  Jan
