Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Yamaha Virago 750, drive gears, yamaha virago 750

Question
I have a hard time getting my bike to start. The starter does not always engage or will not stay engaged. I have had the battery checked. It checked good with 224 CCA. When the starter does engage, the bike runs very good. What could the problem possibly be?

Answer
Hi Gary,

The starter drives are known to be a weak point
in these bikes. The only cure
is replacing the worn starter drive gears inside
the clutch case and the spring clips that
hold the gears so they will engage the gear
on the clutch hub which turns the engine gear.

Here is a link to much information on the
starter drive slipping problems:

Parts may be tough to find so look around
first for suppliers.
bikebandit.com has some stock or check with Yamaha
dealers.

It is mainly wear on the starter drive
gears and also the spring clips that keep
tension on the gears get weak.

The gears are held by the spring clip
and when you try to start the bike
the gear flies outward and engages
the gear on the clutch assembly which
then turns the engine gear and so the engine.

Good luck,
Wayne S.
