Motorcycle Repair: harley 2006 fxstdI, semi trucks, hi mike

Question
Hi Mike...I am more of a truck guy, semi-trucks, i own a 2006 Duece....the front triple tree bearing needs to be replaced..I was told by the dealership that is has a flat spot...the bike has 14K  it was serviced at 13k and this bearing was listed as being lubricated and adjusted at that time...i felt a wobble up front and this is what the dealership found...in addition, the front tire is being replaced...i was told it is cupping...this tire was put on less than 400 miles ago....i am asking you to explain how a bearing developes a flat spot first of all?  second, is the bearing somehow responsible for the cupping of the front fire....harley denied any warranty on the bearing....please give me your opinion on this Paul

Answer
Its not the bearing that has the flat spot but the race. Races wear over time and can get flat spots or it was bad fromt he factory and was not seen when installed. At 14K miles it seems a little premature to be wearing out. I have seen bikes from the 60's with the orgional bearings that were still good. The other problem is a tire will not cup in just 400 miles. Cupping is from under or over inflated not from a wobble. You bike would really have to have a bad wobble for a tire to go bad in that short of time.
By the way, did they show you this cupping? If they didnt, ask to see it
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
