Motorcycle Repair: 85 evo, check your battery, battery check

Question
QUESTION: i have an 85 evo and the problem is this, the motor sounds good when first starting then starts running like crap. "but" if i unplug the stator, it runs like a champ. i replaced the coil , single fire and the rectifier. am i gonna have to replace the stater too?

ANSWER: First you need to determine if its charging. Check your battery to make sure its good. If the battery tests ok, then start the bike and at the battery, check the voltage. At 2000 RPM you should be gettng about 13.5 volts. If it is below this then you need to test the stator to see if its putting out voltage as well as a OHMs test on it.
Let me know what you find

QUESTION: hi mike,
i am getting 13.5 at the battery and i did a grounded stater check and getting no resistance but there is a lil oil comming out of the stater plug, could the oil be shorting it out?
dan

Answer
No, the oil shouldnt short it out, but since the bike runs great when the stator is unplugged, then I suspect you have a intermintent short in the stator. One of the wires might have lost its insulaton and is arcing againt the case. I would pull the stator and inspect it. If you have a cracked or bare wire then I would replace it
Good luck and and happy riding
