Motorcycle Repair: low fuel light on inst.cluster, temperature resistance, bill silver

Question
when I get below 1 gal of fuel in res. tank my fuel low light should come on but it doesn't. I changed the light bulb in the instrument cluster but no help. I have power and ground at the sensor on the tank. I'am suspecting a bad sensor.I'am I on the right track??? thanks for the help mike

Answer
Mike, I don't know what you are working on, but you have eliminated everything but the sensor itself. Sensors either have a float or if they are electronic, sense the change in temperature/resistance from being submerged to being out in ambient air temperature. Make sure that the tank is grounded to the chassis, unless the circuit has a floating ground within the wiring design.

Search the web for your make/model and fuel sensor issues. Call your dealer's parts department and see if they sell a lot of them, which will give you further confirmation about that component's tendencies to fail.
