Motorcycle Repair: 1980 fxs starter removal, starter removal, oil tank

Question
Hi,I have the manual but it seems to leave a lot of questions unanswered. The manual says to remove the starter thru bolts. What holds the starter to the inner primary cover besides the transmission bracket, do the thru bolts screw into the primary? Do i have to remove the primary cover if i am just replacing the starter. On a different subject, the bike has been sitting for 5 years, drained all the fluids cleaned the oil tank and replaced all oil lines do I have to worry about hardened oil deposits in the engine. If so is there any way i can run something thru the system to clean it out? Thanks

Answer
Remove the trans bracket and the thru bolts and the starter will come out. You dont have to remove the primary cover.
On the oil, once you have it started, let it warm up and then change the oil. you dont have to worry about any deposits.
Good luck and happy riding
