Motorcycle Repair: Overtightened oil drain plug, oil drain plug, drain bolt

Question
Hi,

I decided to do an oil change on my bike, a 2000 YZF600r - on my own for the first time. I ended up over tightening the oil drain bolt, and the plug/case or the threading(not sure what its called but its what the bolt goes in to) is cracked.

What kind of repairs will this require, and how much is it likely to cost me to get this done ?

Answer
There are a number of fixes to try now. One would be an oversized self tapping drain plug you can pick up at a Automotve parts store. You may drain the oil and gas out carefully lay the bike on its side and some drain plug kits require drilling the drain hole larger then installing the new drain bolt as it will cut its own threads. Have a shop vac close to the hole as you tap in new threads to minimize shavings inside case, there is an epoxy patch you can put on the cracks of they extend beyond the machined area. Do not use silicone on the cracks it may seal then the oil breaks it down and it starts to leak.  You do not want to buy engine case halves as the cost for the parts and labor will be more than the bike is worth.
