Motorcycle Repair: 1982 cb750, stator coil, issue model

Question
Hi Bill, I am having a charging issue with my bike.  It has sat for a couple years and now it has a new battery but after a very short ride (5 minutes) the battery is to low to even start the bike.  I have read that a stator coil could be the problem.  Do you agree?  And is there a difference between a stator coil, and pick up coil?  How bout a stator alternator?  I've seen all these things and am unsure what to purchase.  Thanks so much for your time and advice.

Answer
Jason, if the stator lead hasn't fried itself and the rectifier/regulator haven't been damaged, the usual cause is the alternator's ROTOR.

See:

The stator is the outer winding coil set in the alternator. "Pickup coils" are generally related to the ignition system function.
