Motorcycle Repair: 04 FLSTF charging system, stator repairs, meter test

Question
QUESTION: battery will not charge, misfires severely when dieing then stops running all together. runs fine with charge.. began process of regulator removal, upon doing this i discovered post was broken on circuit breaker (regulator lead). question is.... will a broken circuit breaker lead cause malfunction of the charging system?

ANSWER: It can if its not sending voltage to the battery. One other thing. You were removing the regulator. Did you test the stator first to make sure it was not bad?

QUESTION: I did not remove the regulator once I discovered the broken breaker.. thats as far as I went.. I am aware that it could also be the stator. Repairs I can do myself. Harley Davidson wants $90.00 just to check the charging system  "HD" (Hundred Dollars)... how do I check the system myself with minimal test equipment?

Answer
Pull the plug from the regulator to the stator. Using a OHMs tester, test from one wire to ground. There should be no OHMs. Then do the other. Same thing. Not go wire to wire, should show OHMs.
Now with the bike running and a AC volt meter test at the wires from the stator. At 2000 RPMs you should show around 50-60 volts. No voltage and the stator is bad. If the stator passes everything then the regulator is bad
Good luck and happy riding
