Motorcycle Repair: Weak Spark to the Spark Plug, kawasaki kx250, digital ignition

Question
Hi there, I took my 1999 Kawasaki KX250 out riding this past weak and it ran good for about 3 hours, but after about a half hour rest it lost spark to the spark plug or if it got any it was really weak. I inspected the ignition system and clean all grounds. I replaced the Spark Plug. After a quick inspection, I found that a wire was pulled out of the condensor. What is the condensor used for and could that be the problem? The wierd thing is that even with the condensor removed now, it is generating good spark, but I am afraid that it is going to die out again. Any suggestions, would be very helpful.

Thank you

Answer
Hi Barry,

The condenser in a breaker points and condenser ignition system would store electrical current while the points were open, and release the current when the points closed to produce an arc at the spark plug.

The condenser also helped to prevent the points contacts from burning by absorbing excess or back-flow current.

I suspect the condenser is defective and causing the problem. It's likely not able to store a sufficient charge to energize the digital ignition system on your KX.

I recommend getting a copy of the service manual and learn about testing the electrical system.

Always verify the integrity of the condenser (and other parts) before buying replacement parts.
