Motorcycle Repair: Setting points gap, kawasaki kd80, kawasaki dealer

Question
I have a 1980 Kawasaki KD80 and would like to know the amount of gap necessary to obtain points that are gapped correctly? Thanks, Stanley

Answer
Hi Stanley,

The points gap is usually best
set around .014" inch.

It is more important that the points
just break open when the timing marks
are aligned on your flywheel.
The gap may vary depending on these marks
being aligned properly.

Watch your points and see if they
just start to open when the timing
marks align. Usually the mark for
spark is an "F" mark on the flywheel
and there is another mark on the engine case.

Turn the engine in it's normal running
direction when you check the points opening.

When you get it set so the points just
break open on the "F" mark the gap should
take care of itself.

If the points don't seem to open .014"
then your points may have wear on the
fibre heel that rubs on the opening cam.
They will need to be replaced then.

To replace the points you will have to find
a flywheel puller. K&N online may have one or
your Kawasaki dealer.

The timing of the points opening is
more important than the actual gap.
