Motorcycle Repair: BELT ADJUSTMENT WITHOUT THE TOOL ?, correct tension, belt tension

Question
Hi Jan

I own a '85 Harley Electra Glide Classic.
Can I adjust the belt without buying the: Belt Tension Tool ?

Some says of which I don't understand is: I take three fingers under the middle of the belt and twist it to 45 degrees ?

Any and all suggestions with be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
GOD BLESS YOU JAN

Answer
Hi Ray,

The belt tension tool is to ensure the correct tension range, and is basically a way to ensure the belt is not overtightened.  If you are mechanically inclined, go to your buddy's bikes and check the tension, then put yours at the same.  If in doubt, splash out for the belt tension tool.  It's not rocket science...  Overtightening is worse than leaving it a little too loose; same as a drive chain.

Good luck,  Jan
