Motorcycle Repair: 1987 Yamaha Virago/ Starter Problem, www google, starter clutch

Question
I put a new starter on my bike and when i push the start button the starter just spins. I was wondering if that is a common problem? Or if there another possible reason its not cranking the engine.

Answer
Hi Nick,

Starter problems are fairly common on the
Viragos but Yamaha used two different
kinds of starting designs.

The later one that your bike should have
is using a starter clutch or bendix drive
much like most cars use.

It is a little gear and one way clutch type
inside the engine case.

Most likely the one way clutch drive is slipping.
It cannot be fixed just replace it.

Here is a video link to an older Virago
starter repair which I think is like yours: (copy/paste the link)

Get yourself a manual and it should not be too difficult to do.
Some older Viragos are different starter design so
be careful not to mix them up if you read anything online.
