Motorcycle Repair: 1982 CBX Speedometer makes whining noise, cbx club, speedometer cable

Question
Jan,
My 1982 CBX now makes a rather loud whining noise. It has progressively been getting louder.  Bought it at 8K miles and now 10 yrs. later at 15K miles it has been getting louder over the past 8 months.  I disconnected the speedo cable and no whining.
What is the best procedure to eliminate thew whining ?  Will simple lube (graphite/sewing machine oil) work if injected into the speedometer cable connection or is it necessary to take the speedo apart and clean and lube the gears ??  What is the best lube to use ??

Answer
The mechanism in the gauges is prone to some issues after all these years.  The grease dries out so the lubricating properties deteriorate.  You can try some simple penetrating oil VERY SPARINGLY on the bottom of the cable connection, but likely the mechanism would need to be overhauled.  Very few people can open the gauge up, as the ring is rolled on the body and very difficult to remove, even more difficult to re-install without it looking terrible.  There are some shops that rebuild these clocks, you should be able to source these through the CBX club forums found on www.cbxclub.com  Good luck,  Jan
