Question
THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION.I THINK I FOUND THE PROBLEM,ON THE END OF THE SHIFTER THERE IS A BRACKET  THAT HAS SPRINGS ON IT AND ON THE END OF THAT THERE IS A PIECE THAT HAS 2 LITTLE HOOKS ON IT ONE OF THEM IS BROKEN OFF.DOES THE SHIFTER JUST PULL OUT OR IS THERE SOME THING THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN OFF.

Answer
Hi Rod,

It sounds like the shifter shaft assembly
is broken. The hooks you mentioned are
probably the ones that pull on
the shift drum pins to make it rotate
and shift the gears.

The shaft should pull out after
removing the lever bracket on the
other side of the engine.

It might be a little tight if there is
dirt or rust on it. You can try to clean
the end of the shaft a bit before pulling it out.

There is an oil seal it goes through also.

You can find some pictures of the assembly here:

Just take care and check that it works
before closing things up.
If you block the machine up
and turn the wheels by hand you should be
able to carefully shift it through all the gears
once you replace any broken parts.
Just watch how the shifter turns the drum
by pulling on the drum pins.
That is how it shifts the gears inside.
Good luck!
