can i put an electric starter on a 1978 harley sportster xlch, and if so what kind can i use?

Yes, you can install a electric starter. You do have to make some changes, however. Your best bet is to buy a starter kit. It will have all the parts you need to convert the bike over to electric start. JP Cycles or V-Twin Manufacturing should sell them.
