Motorcycle Repair: 1996FXSTS, khrome werks, mixture settings

Question
Hi Mike,
I have had my 1996 Springer softail for three years now, I bought it with 4500 miles I now have 8000 miles on it.. The bike is like new and all stock except for the "khrome werks" exaust system that was changed prior to me owning it. The bike has always started exceptionally well and has run to my satisfaction here in South Florida with an occasional cough or pop. Last week I noticed a gooey substance leaking out of the OEM "V2" ignition cover. I drilled out the rivets and realized that the pick up that is incorporated with a safety switch that shuts the bike down if it should happen to spill had melted due to the age of the bike however the bike ran perfect. Not to find myself on the side of the road I replaced the pick up with one without the safety switch in order to save $$.. A friend of mine suggested I jet the carb. We removed the OEM slow jet 42 and proceeded to drill it out with a .0225 #74 jet bit. The bit was worn and dull so we used the next size up, reassembled the bowl and I took it for a short ride. The bike woke up upon acceleration bud did idle low.I set the idle up a bit then ran it for a short spell, it still didn't idle worth a darn and the plugs fowled out because it was much too rich and getting too much fuel.. My friend suggested replacing the 42 jet with a 45 however in researching this upgrade I am learning that I might have to readjust the mixture and possibly change the main jet also in conjunction with fine tuning by watching the way the plugs burn in order to dial it in over a period of time through trial and error. . At this point I feel I should have left the darn thing the way it was rather then getting involved with more issues.. I havent gone to the slow jet 45 as yet and have not changed any mixture settings. Do you suggest I try the 45 or just get an original 42 and put that back. I can live with an occasional spit now and then. Maybe I should have left well enough alone and not listened to anyone. Please send me in the right direction ... Thanks in advance!!  Joe

Answer
Lets go back to square one. First, go back to the stock size jet. Since you are fouling plugs you will only foul them worse by going to the next size bigger jet. Changing the air/fuel mixture will not help. The only affects the idle mixture.
Your best bet is to get a Dyna-jet kit and install it. It will help with the spitting and will give you more throttle response.
Good luck and happy riding
