Motorcycle Repair: carb adj,2005 shadow 600, vacuum line, fuel mixture

Question
how do i adjust the carb on this bike. all the potiental adjustments are capped by the manufacture and I dont want to take out the wrong (metal plug)
It just idles real rich

Answer
Hi Ken,

There are a few things that can cause the rich idle
condition. The pilot or idle mixture screw on these
bikes controls fuel not air. It is located on the
front bottom of the carb near the engine.
It is in a vertical position so it's hard to see.

If it is capped then you would have to drill
a small hole just far enough into the plug
to put a screw in it and pull on the screw
to get the plug out. Don't drill too far
or the head of the pilot screw will be damaged.

Warm up the bike and turn the screw clockwise to
lean the idle fuel mixture. Normal is about a turn
out from seated.

The other things to check are the fuel cutoff valve
diaphragm on the side of the carb.
It is under a small cover with three screws in it.
It has a rubber type diaphragm that might
have holes in it or it might be stuck open.
This is an anti-backfire valve.
When you let off the throttle this cuts the
low speed air to richen the fuel mixture slightly.

Also the auto fuel valve may develop a leak
in it's vacuum diaphragm causing it to
suck fuel from the fuel lines into the vacuum line
and finally into the engines intake where the
vacuum line attaches.

If the bike is running very rich the spark plugs will
be black. Use the plugs as a guide to the fuel mixture.
