Motorcycle Repair: PW 80, two stroke engines, old engines

Question
HAVE A PW 80 99 OR 01 I CAN GET IT TO FIRE IF I SPRAY SOME INTO THE BREATHER OF CARB BUT IT WILL NOT STAY RUNNING IT WILL REV WITH THROTTLE BUT ONCE THE FUEL IS BURNT UP IT DIES LIKE ITS CHOKING OUT

Answer
Dustin,

If your bike runs when you spray fuel
into the carb mouth it means
you are not getting enough fuel.

First check that the fuel is flowing well to
the carb from the tank.

Second, you will have to check that
the float inside the carb is not
sticky. It should lift up and down
freely. Check if the float valve
needle and seat are okay.
That is where the fuel enters the carb.

The carb jets are very small in these
so you will have to make sure they
are clean. There is a main jet in the
bottom center of the carb and
an idle jet next to that.
These have to be very clean.

Also the carb should be soaked or sprayed
thoroughly with carb cleaner.
Spray the cleaner though all the
passageways you can see.

Fuel can plug up a carb very quickly if
the bike is parked. The fuel gets
gummy and plugs all the carb jets.

If a good carb cleaning does not help
you may be low on engine compression.
If the engine is good then the carb
is the most likely problem.

Keep the air filter clean and use
a new NGK brand spark plug if possible.

Two stroke engines can have leaks
on the crankcase seals which
can cause running problems.
This is rare and happens on very old
engines most of the time.

Some shops can pressure test the crankcase
to check for this problem.
