Motorcycle Repair: 1975 CB400/4 carbs/timing, mesh filters, pod filters

Bill i hope you can help!!I rebuilt bike as an old school caferacer and used mesh filters no airbox, and i have lowered the main needel jet clip one notch. I have set timing on the F mark (useing light bulb, old school) on both points, gap set at 0.14.valve clearances checked. Carbs balanced (useing procarb)mixter checked (useing Colourtune).The bike pops on higher reves and strugels to get up to 45mph!!! Any idear what to try next!!! Jeff... I got one just like that here now!

First, check compression... should be above 150psi.

You didn't mention the exhaust system....

With the change from air box to pod filters, the engine will be running leaner than normal. The needles needed to be raised, by moving the clip DOWN, not up. Probably you will need some #80 main jets, especially if the exhaust is not OEM. Make sure that the gas cap venting is okay and the petcock screen in the fuel tank isn't plugged up.

Remove the points plate and check the spark advancer for sticking. If it is frozen up, then you have no spark advance. Fix that, get the jetting correct and all should be well. I am assuming that the cam timing is correct and compression is above 150psi on all four cylinders.
