Motorcycle Repair: 1976 honda xl175, valve stem seals, digital caliper

Question
hello. i just bought a 1976 XL175. it was a non running bike when i bought it.   i started working on it today and found that it has a broken intake valve still stick in the head.   would you happen to know what the size of the valve is so i can get a replacement. thanks

Answer
Aaron,  the valve stem size is probably 5.5. I can't say I have had one apart to compare against other models of that size and type.

14711-362-000 is the Honda part number. Apparently, they used the same part on ALL XL175s, so if you are on Ebay seeking parts, any XL175 intake valve should fit just fine.

A handy tool to buy is a digital caliper from Harbor Freight. It will accurately measure the stem size and valve head diameter for you. They are quite inexpensive, too.

If the valve is broken in the guide, you will most likely have to replace the guide and the valve, making sure that there is correct clearance between the two parts.

Be sure to replace the valve stem seals, as well.
