Motorcycle Repair: Sportster ?, clutch adjustment, clutch lever

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2007 1200C Sportster.  I recently changed transmission fluid by: (1) draining the fluid - which did not seem to equal anywhere near 30-32 oz; (2) took off the side cover held with 6 screws (spring with base, rubber seal, and small plate that I think goes in the area where the clutch cable enters the transmission?).  The small plate has a small hole in it.  I placed 1 qt of HD Transmission Fluid into case. Placed the spring with slotted base into side of tranny, placed small plate in slot at cable entrance, rubber seal replaced after many adverbs and adjectives....and replaced the cover and 6 screws.  I now have about and inch or more of play (slack) in my clutch lever.  It will not retract back to full clutch tension.  I am puzzled on what have caused or what I may have done wrong with reassemble?  I am also concerned about the lack of fluid that drained from the tranny.....not much more than a cup.  Clutch and tranny worked good until I did fluid change.  I have not taken the bike for test run due to not knowing extent of clutch problem.  Any advice, expertise will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.  Don

ANSWER: My first question would be where did you drain the trans fluid from? There should have been more than that.
When you removed the cover you see a slotted screw int he center. Did you turn it?

QUESTION: Mike - I drained the fluid by taking out the transmission drain plug located on the left side (sitting on the bike).  With the bike on the side stand, all of the fluid was certain to drain.  I measured the fluid and it was less than 1 cup....nothing near what the level calls for (30-32 oz).  Has me worried about possible damage.  Last serviced at dealership.  Anyway, the spring with the nut base is where I screwed up.  No knowing that it was the lock washer for the clutch adjustment, in trying to figure out what it was, I remember placing and turning it on the adjuster several times, this in turn releasing pressure on the clutch screw.  It was very loose......that being the problem.  Per HD on-line video, I placed 1/4 turn pressure on clutch screw once resistance was obtained (after releasing tension on cable).  Adjusting clutch screw and then cable to 1/8-1/16 play was accomplished.  Filled fluid level to bottom of spring......test drove and worked better than before.  However, I am worried about any possible damage to tranny and clutch due to low level of drained fluid?  I hear or feel no noise or vibration other than what a Sportster is known.  I made it a point to place my finger into the fluid pan as deep as I could to feel for any medal shavings.....none.  I strained the fluid in a cotton t-shirt and nothing.

I would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions for anything I can do to determine if tranny and/or clutch are OK. Many thanks for the "did you turn it -slotted screw"  - that was the remedy - to re-adjust what I screwed up.  Good job man!  I owe you!  This is a great service.  Don

Answer
Depending on how long the fluid was low and how low it was it might have made the clutches wear more and your chain wear. Since your trans didnt slip doesnt sound like any damage, but you might want to inspect yoru clutches and primary chain
Good luck and happy riding
