Motorcycle Repair: Removal of wheel bearing outer race, slide hammer puller, yamaha xv1100 virago

Question
I have a 1998 Yamaha XV1100 Virago and I'm changing the wheel bearing on it. So far I've got one of the bearings out and the spacer, but on the other side the bearing was totally shot. I got off the seal and the inner race, including the ball bearings, but the outer race is still stuck in the hub and i can't figure out how to get it out so i can put the new bearings in. Thanks.

Answer
Dave, you might want to take it to a machine shop and see if they can press it out, without damaging the hub.

At home, try a propane torch or an electric heat gun to warm up the parts and see if that will help move out the race. One trick on old rusty bolts that are stuck in a blind hole is to heat up the part and put some wax (like candlewax) in around the joint.

Your local auto parts store may have a slide hammer puller that they can rent to you to help put some muscle into this problem part.

A long slender steel punch or brass drift may be useful to reach all the way in to catch an edge of the race, from the back side, too.

Kroil or Seafoam penetrants are good products, but be careful of mixing penetrants in the presence of open flames (propane torches).
