Hi Bill, i was actually hoping you could answer a couple of questions. The first one is, when i push the starter, all I hear is a faint clicking sound and my headlight shuts off, as long as Im holding it. i was wondering what it could be. Also, where is the best place to add oil/ how can i tell if i need to add? the dipstick on the bike isnt quite like the one on my car.

Answer
Ben, the faint clicking is from either a very low battery state of charge and/or a faulty starter solenoid. Have the battery fully charged and load-tested, then try it again. If you still get clicks with a fully charged battery, then the starter solenoid is probably at fault.

The starting system is designed to bypass the headlight when the starter button is depressed, then reconnects when the button is released. This is normal.

Look at http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-vf500f-500-interceptor-1986-us_model7598/partslist/E+...

You will see the oil gauge dipstick towards the front of the clutch cover and the oil filler cap at the rear of the clutch cover.

Put the bike on its centerstand, so the engine is upright. Withdraw the forward dip stick, wipe the tip off, insert the dipstick into the hole again.. DO NOT screw it back in... to check the oil level. Use rear filler cap to add oil.
