Motorcycle Repair: replaced water pump and wont start, float bowls, fuel compression

Question
I Have an 2003 Suzuki VL800.  I recently changed the water pump and put evertyhing back.  I have tried to start it, but it wont start.  There is no exhaust coming from the pipes.  How ever there is fuel coming from the fuel tank to the fuel line.

Steve

Answer
Steve, you need air, fuel, compression and spark to make the engine operate.

According to the www.bikebandit.com site you have a VZ800, if it is a 2003 bike or it is a 2002 VL800, the best I can tell. Make sure you have your models/years straight, when ordering parts.

I can't imagine that you disturbed much with your water pump swap, but the stator is on that side and the pulse coils are part of that, so any harness connectors on the left that might have been disconnected, should be rechecked.

Otherwise, make sure your KILL switch is in the correct position, check your fuel level in the tank, pull spark plugs, then ground them to the engine and check for spark. If they come out wet, you know that you have fuel, hopefully fresh fuel.

If the bike sat for weeks on end, the fuel may have evaporated/separated in the float bowls and caused blocked idle jets, which make for hard starting.

There are some safety switches on many later bikes, that might have been disturbed when you were working on it. One is a side-stand switch.
