Motorcycle Repair: 85 fxst primary, clutch basket, clutch plate

Question
Motorcycle Repair: 85 fxst primary, clutch basket, clutch plate
only photo i have
I lost a bolt from the shift linkage case on 85 fxst tranny and need to get behind the primary to check for damage and replace bolt. it started as i was leaving the station and would not shift smoothely i had to kinda bump the shifter, almost felt like somthing was sticking, i checked the linkage and noticeed the long rod kinda catching the bolt on engine case but still moving. and then noticed that when i tryed to shift by hand that the oval cover that the shifter rod goes to on the tranny was missing a bolt and when you try to shift the whole cover moves.it doesnt look to be cracked but space is tight. im runnin an S&S 107 with a stock 4 speed and pretty sure stock primary. what tools or special knowledge should i have before my teardown. my mechanical skills are descent but my experiance with harleys slim. any inputs are greatly appreciated. i want to learn how to fix my own scoot not pay some body else.im guessing i have to remove both inner and outer and clutch but if theres another way im open to suggestion.

Answer
You need to start by removing the primary cover. Once that is off you need a impact wrench to remove the motor sprocket nut. Remove the chain adjuster. Then remove the clutch plate cover. Once that is off you have to remove the clutch basket nut. That will take an impact too. Its a left handed thread. You will need a clutch basket puller the remove the basket. Once that is all off you need to remove the bolts from the inner primary, slide it foward and remove the hoses on the back of it.
If you are planning on doing your own work on your bike, I would suggest getting a service manual. In it you will find some great pics and steps on how to do repairs to your bike
Good luck and happy riding
