Motorcycle Repair: REAR FENDER REMOVAL, rear fender, bottom head

Question
Hi Mike

First and formost I want to THANK YOU for your help with my
1985 FLHT Elec.Glide.

Mike I'm in the process of having my bike repainted and I'm doing all the sanding 600grit.

Got all the parts off except the REAR FENDER - DAH !!!

Mike my problem is that RIVET that hold the rear end to the frame, with one LARGE RIVET. I NEVER REMOVED a rivet before.

I hope you understand my poor explanation about this matter. I grided-off the head of the rivet and tried drill thru it too. And it hasn't moved !

I believe I also have to grid off the bottom head too and then drill into the rivet ?

Mike you tell me. I need to get that back fender off to sand it.
One guy told my I DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THE REAR WHEEL OFF. Is that
true Mike ?

There's a nut I can't get to on the inside of the rear fender. He said the pros do it where the rear wheel is still attached to the belt; but you just LOWER the wheel somewhat to get at that nut that's on both sides of the fender - WHEW !

That's it Mike, I'm in your hands any and all suggestions I will take from you Mike.

Thanks
GOD BLESS
Ray M.
I think the bottom part of the rivet has

Answer
To remove the rivet you just need to remove the cap on it and then using a punch drive it out.  If you want to get under the fender, put a lift under the frame and remove either the upper or lower bolts from the shocks and then jack the bike up. the rear end will lower giving you room for your hands under the fender.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
