QUESTION: yes it is 1982 xlh 1000

ANSWER: Several ideas come to mind. First was the piston fit within tolerances on both cylinders were the cylinders honed with the proper grit stones and was it done in a 60 degree cross hatch. Second when the rings were installed were the ring gaps spaced properly, installed on the pistons correctly [proper order and correct sides up and proper rails and crimper ring on the oiler set] and were they the proper type ring set for your pistons. Did you install valve seals on your guides, were the guides and valve stems worn beyond useable tolerances or were the guides cracked and were the guides tight in the head, are your heads cracked at the  point where the guide goes though the head. If the above items were all completed correctly then I would check how much oil is in your bottom end should not be very much, 2 to 3 ounces.

QUESTION: i diconected oil line and drained bottom end got alittle more than 6 ounces of oil what would cause this? could it be check valve in oil pump thank you for your time

Answer
Yes it is probablly the oil pump check valve leaking the oil out of your tank into the lower end when the bike is off. Your bike doesn't have a ball and spring against a seat though so a simple reseat with a punch and hammer wouldn't help you. Also 6 ounces of oil shouldn't cause the problem your experiencing a couple of quarts yes. Sounds like your rings didn't seat.
