Motorcycle Repair: hard starting 03 xl1200c, intermediate jet, oil residue

Question
QUESTION: Cold or hot my sporster is hard starting. Backfires thru carb and pipes. Sometimes I run the battery down trying to start. When it does start, it runs just great. The bike has about 11,000 miles, with screaming eagle setup. I choke it, couple of twists and maybe it will or not start. Someone at the shop suggested it was the pickup. What is that? Sorry, hope you can help. I appreciate any help. Love the bike when it runs !!!!

ANSWER: Did you jet the carb after making the changes? Pull your plugs and let me know what color they are

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, the carb was rejetted and I was told it had been on the dyno and everything was ok. The plugs are new, but in checking them they are black, oily, appear to be heavly fouled. Pulled breather cover off and some blow by was in cover. The filter was very dirty or black with oil residue. That was supposed to be replaced as well. Thanks for your help, looking forward to hearing back from you.

Answer
Your problem of hard starting is the foulded plugs. There are two reasons for this. First is the coil  or plug wires are bad. You can OHMs test them to make sure they are good. The other reason is to big an intermediate jet in the carb.
Good luck and happy riding
