Motorcycle Repair: not charging, charging battery, stator

my 77 superglide with 1200 shovel is not charging battery . Runs fine until battery runs down and I notice headlight gets very dim.How can I fix?

First you need to determine what the problem is. First thing you need to do is check your battery. Make sure you dont have a dry cell and it holds a charge. Next, unplug the regulator from the stator and check the stator posts for OHMs. Now start the bike and at the stator posts check the AC voltage at around 2000 RPM. You should be showing around50 volts. If the stator passes the above tests then the regulator is bad. If the stator fails then the stator is bad
