Motorcycle Repair: yamaha fzr 600 1990, yamaha fzr 600, stock front

Question
Hi Chris.  I am on my 6th month of owning my first bike.  So I still consider myself new to the field.  I plan on putting a 520 series chain on my bike.  I am thinking about keeping a stock front tooth setting of 15 and increasing the rear to a 50 from the stock of 45 for some more kick off the line.  Do you think there is anything wrong w/ my setup?

Also a question about cold starts.  Is it normal that i have to use the choke everytime i start the bike up when cold?  or should i be able to start right up w/ out the choke? Do i need to rebuild my carburetor?  Nothing has ever been touched or adjusted in its lifetime.  would fuel cleaner help in my situation? I live in sacramento, CA.

Id like to thank you in advance for your help and knowledge.

Answer
Hi Alex.

let's approach everything one at a time.

1) Yes, you are still a newbie, but that should change in a few years (yep, years. About 5 total).

2) A lot of guys have changed the sprockets on their bikes for different reasons.  That is nothing new.  Just ask any Old-timer that has owned a pre-Evo Harley.  They would normally have 2 sprockets. One for when they were taking long trips (for better MPG) and one for boulevard blasting (for better off the line performance).

3) As far as cold starts, that is precisely what the choke is for.  Don't worry about it.  Just make sure that the bike get's it's regular maintainence service on schedule.  Get the repair manual because it will have all the information that you could normally want to know about your bike as well as it's issues.

4) As far as fuel treatments, putting half a bottle in every few tankfulls can't hurt.  Just make sure that you use the good ones with jet fuel in them.

Good luck and ride safe.
