Motorcycle Repair: speedo/tach combo install, fxstc, test light

im insatalling an aftermarket speedo/tach combo on a 1988 fxstc. i have the speedo wiring done & it works nice. the tach instructions say "install the red wire to the negative side of the coil", but i have nothing to attach the wire to. how do i connect the tach wire to the coil?

Looking at the coil you will see two posts, either on the sides or the front of the coil. that is where the 12 volt wiring is attached. One is the hot side and the other is the negitive side. use a test light and with the key on check both posts. The one that is hot all the time is the hot side and attach your wire to the other side
