Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): toro power throw 824, trouble shooting guide, david answer

Question
QUESTION: Hello John, I have a toro 824 snowblower(hmsk80..155672w..1tpxs3182bf..1171d) with what seems to be a carb problem. I bought it this winter. It came with a non adjustable carb new. After using it I noticed it had a misfire and shoot sparks from the muffler as well as the muffler turning red. I soaked the carb and put in a new kit and the same problem was there. So I replaced the spark plug, cleaned the gas tank and added fresh gas, checked and adjusted valve clearance. I thought that might have been causing it because the clearanc was too small. Removed the head and removed the carbon from the piston and and valves also lapping them. And of course a new head gasket. Also put a new coil on because the spark was not consistently blue. Same problem. So I tried a carb I had from an hm100. Now this is the puzzling part for me anyway. Now it surged in the middle rpm range but ran very good at low & high rpm without the misfire or glowing red muffler. So I thought I finnaly figured it out. I bought a new (adjustable) carb adjusted it 1.5 turns out on both screws and let it warm up. After it warmed up I again adjusted both each direction until it ran the best. It runs exactly the same as the origonal carb with same problem, misfire and glowing muffler. Please Help.

QUESTION: Sorry John I forgot to mention I did change the flywheel key and the valves are set to .008 intake and .012 exhaust. Checked and adjusted at tdc comp stroke. Everything I did to the engine came from the Tecumseh troubleshooting guide. This one has me stumped, especially after putting on the carb from my hm100 with the previously noted results. Could the hm100 carb having a larger throttle opening, have made it run better?

Thank you again
David
