Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Honda vts1100 Shadow, fuse box, starter button

Question
I was riding my bike and doing 55mph, started to slow down for a stop sign, pulled in the clutch to down shift, and the motor shut off.  Now when I try to restart the motor.  Nothing happens. the starter does not engage.  I have checked the fuses in the fuse box on handle bars, and all are still good.  When I turn on key, headlight comes on, and all normal lights come on, but when I push the starter button, there is nothing.  It has 56,000 miles on it, and has never shut off like this before.  I had filled the tank with gas that morning and we had only rode about 60 miles when the motor shut off for no reason.

Answer
Does the bike start when you try to push-start it?  Perhaps your kill switch has shorted out?

When you hit the starter button, do you hear anything?  If you hear clicking, then the solenoid may be bad, or the starter motor.  If you hear nothing, then the starter button or the ignition switch may be bad.  or it could still be the solenoid, identify the 'trigger' wire and see if you get 12V on it when you press the starter button.  Sometimes there is a fuse right on the solenoid too.
