Motorcycle Repair: 1974 cl 360, honda cl360, clutch cable

bill i took the cover off where my clutch cable goes to the push rod was tring to clean it up had alot of crude from chain now i cant seem to get the cover back on + the clutch to work is there something im doing wrong it has aball bearing looks like it pushes push rod + it has a semi round piece with 3 ball bearings on it which i think goes in side the cover between pushrod any help would be appreciated thanks

Loosen up the outer lock nut, and back off the adjuster screw, so the inner mechanism can sink down inside. Put some grease into the recess where the ball goes, to lubricate it and hold it in place.
The ball plate has a flat side on it to help index the parts in place. Test fit everything in the cover before you hook the cable back on and install it again. Be sure that the return spring is present.

When installed and adjusted, the cable should pull the adjuster arm up through an arc from - to /
as it pushes against the steel ball on the end of the clutch pushrod.

Note that the outer cover has two locating dowels, that can get damaged, corroded and make things difficult to install the cover.

Once the cover is on, you can readjust the screw out so that you have just a little free play at the adjustment screw, then fine tune the slack with bottom and top cable adjusters.
