Motorcycle Repair: OIL, harley sportster, oil tank

Question
I HAVE A 1974 HARLEY SPORTSTER 1000CC,IT SAT ALL WINTER AND I WENT TO START IT AND ALL THE OIL WAS GONE OUT OF THE OIL TANK,I KNOW IT MUST BE THE LITTLE BALL IN THE OIL PUMP BUT WILL IT HURT TO KEEP FILLING THE OIL TANK AND RIDEING IT UNTILL I GET AROUND TO PULL OUT THE PUMP,WILL IT BE OVER FILLED IF I KEEP  FILLING IT,THE EXCESS OIL SHOULD BLOW OUT THE TUBE RIGHT,YOUR HELP WOULD BE GREAT,THANK YOU,RANDY

Answer
If the oil pump is letting oil past the ball then its going into the bottom end of the motor. If you fill the tank it will overflow. The best thing to do is start the bike and let it run for a few minutes, so the opil can clear out of the bottom end and then check the oil and fill if needed. Not all the excess oil comes out the vent, some is pumped back to the tank
Good luck and happy riding
