Motorcycle Repair: 1982 honda cm250, honda cm250, flow mufflers

Question
Well iv been messing with this thing for a while. I finally tore the clutch apart again and found it had the wrong friction plates in it. Anyways the shifter was welded on and recently broke off I already bought the new fork and before I tear anything apart, is there any method to it or do you just pull it out and push the new one in? Iv been playing with that 30mm OKO carb and it still has sputters anything past about 3/4 throttle the needle clip is in the top position and i have the smallest main jet which is a #125 in it. Do you think some day i could send you the old carb and some money and have you rebuild it and pick some bigger jets because im no genius but i know enough to get it working. I know it will run lean since i have about 1/2 the exhaust chopped off with high flow mufflers and no airbox, just a round filter right on the carb. Thank you for your time. PS im the dude making the dune buggy with this bike. Heres the link to the carb i bought http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OKO-30mm-RACING-CARB-FLAT-SLIDE-CARBURETTOR_W0QQc...

Is it possible for me to get a carb off a newer Honda 250 street bike? or did they change the intake and valves so much it would never work.

Answer
Erik, If the shift shaft was welded then broke, you have to remove the clutch so you an push the shifter shaft through the cases and into the shift selector components.... if that is what you are talking about.... you mentioned "fork" which could be something else. A shift fork is part of the transmission shift selection parts, which require splitting the cases to install.

That carb is made in China and would need dialing in on a dyno after you have decided what air filter and exhaust to use. If you pull up the choke when the engine starts to fade off, it will either get better or worse, which tells you which way to take the main jet size. You may have to find some 115-120 mains for it. When it stutters like that shut off the motor and read the spark plugs. If they are still all black on the ends, then it is still too rich. You have to give it what it needs.

The CM250 engine is related to the CMX250 Rebel and CB250 Nighthawk engine, so those parts should fit. Make sure you have a strong spark at all times. Clean the plugs or replace them if they get too far fuel-fouled.
