Motorcycle Repair: Honda-CB160 year by Vin. #?, honda cb160, fork sliders

Question
Hi Bill, I just purchased a Honda-CB160 & would like to know what year this is & what years they made this model. I beleive they made them from 1965-69 & hope you can tell me the year with these.
Frame #B160-1067747
Motor #B160E-1067555
Are there any common problems? Do you know where can I purchase parts? I need the battery hold down strap & the front foot pegs & mounting bar. Thank you for any help, Dan

Answer
Dan, Honda began making CB160s in 1965 using 7 digit serial numbers, which they used on all the twins from that year forward.

Your bike was the 67,747 made. The online parts listings show that your bike may still have the steel fork sliders that are chassis colored. They switched to alloy fork types around 70,463
I would guess that your bike was built in 1966-67. The bike was phased out in 1968, when the 175 slant motor bikes were released. We only received the CL175 5 speed bikes, but there were CB175s in other markets. By 1969, the upright 175s were being sold.

Parts are available all over Ebay, through enthusiasts who are on the VJMC.org forum, and new parts sources include www.westernhillshonda.net

The bikes are pretty bullet-proof, as they are being raced in large quantities in AHRMA racing and up in the Pacific NW.

The CL160 shares a lot of parts, other than the tank, fender, exhaust, seat and handlebars.

They are fun little bikes, with good handling and a great sound...

Enjoy,
