Motorcycle Repair: 1984 honda interceptor v four 500, honda interceptor, long periods of time

Question
I put a used fuel pump on ,but the only time the fuel seems too move is when i hit the on off switch for the bike could this be a rely issue, also once the bike does start fuel starts leaking out of the hose for the overflow hose the bike will only keep running if you keep it at a higher rpm.please give me some ideals.  thank you RON.

Answer
Ronald, the fuel system is designed to briefly prime the carburetors, then shut down until the motor is running. Then, the fuel pump is enabled all the time. This is normal operation.

Fuel leaking out the overflow is due to a dirty, sticking float valve usually due to the residues of old fuel in the system for long periods of time. Sometimes, when the motor is running you can rock the bike back and forth enough to move the float and float valve around enough to re-seat it. If it continues to leak, try tapping on the carburetor body with a screwdriver handle a few times to shake it loose. If no luck, then the bowls have to come of and the float valve inspected and/or replaced.

If it doesn't idle, then the idle jets may be plugged up, so carb rack needs to be removed for cleaning.
