Motorcycle Repair: Replacing Front lower fork sliders, damper rod, allen bolt

Question
Hello, I recently decided to change the front fork lower sliders on my 2004 Road King, going from stock to chrome finish. I have a the service manual for my bike and I have sought advice all over the web, mostly forums. Here's where I have the problem. After I remove the front fender, brake calipers and tire, can I change the lower sliders without removing any upper fork assemblies, it seems to me that everything I'm changing is right at the lower sliders, after I move the dust boot and remove the c-clip holding the lowers to the upper, the lowers should come right off. I realize that there is a small allen bolt holding the lowers on, located up and in the lower slider. I just cant seem to get a straight answer and every manual is different. I would appreciate any bit of advice you have.

Answer
There is an allen bolt with a copper seal holding the damper rod into the fork lowers.  Once you remove that, the fork tube should come off.  Depending on the fork design, the seal may have to come off with it, or it may stay in the lower leg.  Depends on the damper design.  If you have a manual, it should describe the procedure.  Good luck,  Jan
