Motorcycle Repair: That Speedometor Cable ?, speedometer cable, bike mike

QUESTION: Hi Mike

I jack-up the Harley ( 1985 FLHT ) she's sitting on engine stands and very secure. I took out the bolts on the calipers from the front fender with some differcult, the f/fender was in the way a bit. A little forcing out 'em out.

One of the brake pads fell-out of the calipers. Finding it hard to put in back in position. I figure while I got the calipers off I mind as well buy new brake pads and hopefully put 'em back in.

Questions Mike please.

1. Do I have to WATCH-OUT in replacing the new (when I buy 'em)
brake pads?

2. How do I detach the speedometor cable from the well ?

3. What the next step in removing the front wheel?

4. Mike do I un-screw the bolt or un-bolt those two bolts under each fork first ?

If you can Mike step by step please. I NEVER removed a front wheel on my bike.

Mike I'd be DEAD in the water if it weren't for you.

ANSWER: You should have any problem with replacing the pads. Just put he new ones back in just like the old ones came out. One thing to remember. Before taking the old pads out, pry the caliber open with a screwdriver or with the new pads it wont go on the the rotor.

To disconnect the cable you have to unscrew it from the speedo. then go to the cable and it will unscrew from the speedo drive unit

You have to loosen the nuts on the forks so that the axle will slide out. Once you have them loose and the axle nut loose the axle will slide out. Might have to tap it with a hammer.

Mike on that SPEEDOMETER CABLE DETACHMENT.

Are you saying that in order to detach the cable I have to FIRST go under the dashboard where the gauges and detach the cable there and then go DOWN TO THE WHEEL and detach the SPEEDOMETER there to release it from the front wheel ?

If you want o remove the cable completly that is what you have to do. If you are just removing the front wheel and now replacing the cable then just pull the axle. the speedo drive unit will come out when you remove the wheel.
