Motorcycle Repair: XLCH Pushrod removal, pushrod, pushrods

Question
Hi Mike I was wondering if you could please help me out with some advice on what to do.

I have a 1973 XLCH ironhead sportster 1000cc, I have a crack in the cam cover and attempting to remove the pushrods in order to remove the cam cover to send it out to be welded. The two inner pushrods (closet to the Carb) came off with no problem but the two outter push rods when attempting to remove them do not want to slide over the adjusting nut (just a hair). I'm scared to try to assist with a screwdriver in fear of damaging the pushrod.

Even when slacking out the locking nut and backing down the adjusting nut to loosen the pushrod it is just short of going over the lip of the nut when trying to remove.

Did I do something wrong? did I remove then in the wrong sequence?

Thanks for your help

Mike

Answer
You didnt do anything wrong. Makw sure you rotate the motor so the lifters are all the way down at the bottom of their stroke and adjust hem all the way down as far as they will go. If you still cant get them out you will have to use a screwdriver it slide them out.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
