Motorcycle Repair: bike shuts down

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 road king the bike shuts down when it gets warm/hot usually about 20 min riding from a cold motor. when it shuts down it will backfire a couple of times, when i roll to a stop it will start right away but only to shut down after i get rolling again (usually about the time i hit 2nd gear) but if i let the bike sit for 5 or 10 min I'm able to go down the road a few miles before it happens again (the longer it sits the further i can go) but if it shuts down and i start it it will idle/rev it up it won't shut down, only when i ride it. i also noticed that it's not charging after it shuts down but starts charging after it sits for about an hour, could it be the voltage regulator?? i have checked for loose grounds, bare wires,i put new relays and a new crank sensor.

ANSWER: Couple of things to check for me. First, when it shuts down, pull a spark plug and see if you are getting spark. Also, what voltage are you showing at the battery, when you say its not charging?

QUESTION: Mike

when it shuts down it will start right away, so it does have spark. I hav a kuryakyn fuel/volt meter on the tank the volt meter is in the yellow but at the battery i have 12.25 volts at idle

Answer
Your voltage is probably dropping and shutting the bike off. What you need to do is test the stator. Unplug the regulator and with a OHM meter test from one wire of the stator to ground, then do the other. Should have 0 OHMs. Go wire to wire. Should show OHMs. Next start the bike and at the wires of the stator you should have about 60 AC volts at around 2000 RPM. Let me know what you find
