Motorcycle Repair: slip on exhaust, heritage springer, dyna jet

Question
I have a 1998 Heritage Springer with stock exhaust. Love the fishtail look but not stock sound. Some dealers say you can put on a aftermarket slip on without doing any carb change etc.. Others say you need to rejet, another says rejet and upgrade aircleaner etc... I found a pair of Samson Fishtail slip ons for a good price. Are these going to give me a better sound? Do I need to do any jetting etc... Or should I take the damn thing in and get raped by the dealer?

Answer
One thing you need to remember is that you bike came from the factory a little lean to pass the EPA standards. Changing the exhaust will make the bike run leaner. Heres is what I would do.
Get your pipes that you want. I would also change the air cleaner to a high flow system. Both you can do yourself. To rejet the carb, you can get a Dyna-jet kit. This will richen your bike back up, give you more throttle responce and if you have a screwdriver and a drill you can install yourself. the directions are great and you should be able to do all the above work in about 2.5 hours. And you dont have to go to a dealer!
Good luck and happy riding
