Motorcycle Repair: Straight Pipes/Gas tank., high temp paint, straight pipes

Question
General bike questions.  They're about an 80 Honda.  Not one that you listed, but I'm hoping that you'll be willing to help anyway.  I have a 1980 Honda cm400t.  It's kind of a junk bike that I'm rebuilding/improving/prettying up.  There are two issues That I want to ask you about.

1. The pipes are pretty much junk.  Out of the engine they're near rusted through and the mufflers are rotting out.  Instead of re-chroming of buying new pipes ($350)  I was thinking about using a high temp paint on the pipes from the engine to the mufflers, and then replacing the mufflers with straight pipes.  What would that do to performance? How long should they be?  Is it even a good idea to begin with?

2. I want to get a bigger tank.  The one I have is 1.5 gallons plus reserve.  I get 55 mpg so it's alright, but I have to fill up every day or two.  Do you have any idea what bike might have a bigger tank that wouldn't require too much modification?

Thanks for your consideration.  Have a nice day.

Answer
Four a four cycle engine, the back pressure is not needed for performance like a two cycle engine.  However it may influence your fuel economy.  And it will be significantly louder.
Regarding your second question, I would go to a bike junkyard and start fitting gas tanks.  I have no idea which bikes would be compatible with a CM400T.  Good luck,  Jan
