Motorcycle Repair: harley charging system, zero ohms, mike wells

Question
after reading and trying your(mike wells) answer to a previous question regarding checking the system,i did the check. when i started the bike(1988 softail) to sheck the a.c. from the stator, alot of smoke poured out of the port. i wasnt able to get a good reading with my fluke meter, and also was afraid something was cooking. afterwards-i cleaned the 2 prong plug, reinstalled it. only have 11.9v at battery while running engine.stator test seemed to pass..should i suspect the voltage regulator? battery is new.thankyou

Answer
Go from one prong on the stator to ground. then do the other. You should get zero OHMs. then go prong to prong, you should get OHMs. Try the AC volt test again and make sure the meter prongs are not touching the case or you will ground the stator and get smoke. If the stator does not pass the above tests, then its bad. If it passes then the regulator is bad
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
