RV Repair: leaky toilet, leaky toilet, wet carpet

Question
We have a 1971 Prowler 21 ft. travel trailer.  On our first trip out last week I hooked up the water and soon had wet carpet beginning from around the base of the toilet.  It doesn't appear to be dirty water.  It discontinued when the water was shut off.

I don't think it is water leaking from the bowl.  I emptied the bowl once and it continued to get worse.

I examined the intake hose and pipes underneath the chassis going into the toilet and they were dry.  The toilet has no visible screws or bolts for easy removal.

We have owned the trailer for four years.  No work has been done on the toilet in that time.  What are my next steps?  Thanks.

Answer
Mark,
It sounds like you have a leaky ball valve or possibly a leaky vacuum breaker.  If it's the original toilet I would go ahead and put a new one in if you plan on keeping it for any length of time.  If you can't see the mounting bolts they are probably at 5 o'clock and 11 o'clock.  Push down the pedals in the front of the toilet and you should see the one at 5 o'clock.  If you lift the seat you should see a small round plastic plug at 11 o'clock.  You can remove that plug and access that nut with a long extension and socket.  Otherwise the two nuts should be at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.  If they aren't if you can get me a model # I can pull up a print and check where they are.  I hope this helps, good luck and happy camping.
