Motorcycle Repair: electrical problem, solo seat, electrical problem

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 model Deuce. I decided to change my seat from a rider and passenger to a solo seat. While I had the seat off I decided to wash out the area under the seat. I went for a ride the next day and after a couple of starting and shutting the bike off, the battery was drained. I jumped the battery and continued on the ride. I noticed that the bike wasn"t performing as well as it had before. There was no power. The bike still ran smoothly at idle and while giving it more throttle, but I had to open the throttle more to get the desired speed. The battery had to be jumped each time I turned it off, so I replaced the battery. It started each time for a while but still had no power. Then this battery became discharged also while sitting in the driveway with nothing turned on,like there is a short in the circuit, Is it possible that I shorted something out when I washed out under the seat, or is this just a coincidence. I didn't use a lot of water at high pressure . Also , what would cause the battery to discharge with nothing turned on. This bike is completely stock with no add ons. When I turn on the ignition the engine light comes on and then goes off after about 4 seconds with no code stored. It is evident the battery isn't being charged, but I keep thinking i got something wet and it shorted out. I don't understand the sudden loss of power either. Your help would be appreciated.   Thanks.

ANSWER: Start the bike and at the battery and around 2000 RPM let me know what voltage you are showing

QUESTION: At the battery using a volt meter I am showing 12.3 volts

ANSWER: You are showing to low of voltage for your bike. You should be showing around 13.5 volts. When you washed the bike, somthing might have gotten shorted or its just somthing that happened at the same time. First, I would check the wiring fromt he battery to the regulator to make sure there are no shorts or frayed wires. If the wires are ok then I would do is a OHM test on the stator and then a voltage test on the stator to see if the stator is bad or the regulator. If the stator passes then the regulator is bad. If the stator fails then the regulator is bad. Sometimes, but not often, the stator shorts out and burns the regulator.

QUESTION: Mike, I unplugged the wiring connection between the stator and voltage regulator. The connection had primary oil standing in it. When i unplugged it the oil ran out. I have never had the primary cover off.          Does it have a seal to keep oil from getting to the stator? Or could it be engine crankcase oil because of a bad seal.

Answer
the stator runs in the primary oil to keep it cool. If you are getting oil at the plug then the rubber plug in the hole is letting oil leak by. You can wipe it out, it wont hurt anything, unless it get to leaking alot
